August on this coast rewards the organised. These aren't a schedule — they're the experiences that book out fastest, to piece together however, and whenever, you like. Star anything into the shortlist and share it with the group.
Lisbon rewards wandering more than ticking boxes — a city of hills, viewpoints, tiled façades and long lunches. With fourteen of you, the honest advice: split into smaller groups by appetite — castle people, museum people, beach people, shopping people — and reconvene for dinner.
West along the river: Belém Tower and the Jerónimos Monastery — the cloisters are the best interior in Lisbon — with the striking modern MAAT museum next door.
Non-negotiable: warm pastéis de Belém from the 1837 bakery that invented them. Go early — the queue moves fast, but the tour buses land by 10:30.
The oldest quarter — a maze of lanes below São Jorge Castle that survived the 1755 earthquake. Ride up, then get deliberately lost walking down narrow alleyways — fresh-grilled sardines nearby, a cold beer on tap, and tiny boutique shops and bars along the way.
Stop at the Portas do Sol and Santa Luzia viewpoints — the two classic balconies over the rooftops. Tuesday or Saturday, the Feira da Ladra flea market sprawls behind the National Pantheon.
The elegant post-earthquake grid: Praça do Comércio opening onto the river, the iron Santa Justa lift, coffee in Chiado — and the Time Out Market at Cais do Sodré: every famous Lisbon chef under one roof, ideal for fourteen people who will never agree on one restaurant.
Fado in Alfama — Portugal's blues, sung close enough to touch. Book a fado house in advance and go hungry — they'll serve you delicious food throughout the night.
Bairro Alto — a hillside of small bars spilling into the streets from about 10 PM; Pink Street at Cais do Sodré for the later crowd.
Or the simplest great evening in Lisbon: drinks at a miradouro — the viewpoint terraces at Senhora do Monte or São Pedro de Alcântara at sunset, for the price of a beer.
LX Factory — a repurposed industrial strip under the bridge: bookshops, brunch, rooftop bars, live music, fine dining, and the Sunday market.
And out east, the Oceanário — one of the world's great aquariums; the reliable move if the weather turns or anyone in the group is under twelve.
Split up by appetite. Reconvene for dinner. Repeat.
Drive 15 minutes to Cacilhas, park, and ride the ferry to Cais do Sodré — ten scenic minutes with the whole city laid out ahead, boats roughly every quarter-hour, running until about 2 AM.
You land in the middle of everything (Time Out Market is a 3-minute walk), nobody drives home, and the night boat back is its own small event.
Costa da Caparica is the local secret Lisbon keeps from its tourists — a long string of Atlantic beaches with boardwalks, surf schools and beach bars. The bars rent out loungers by the day if you want a base camp.
The sandbar beach clubs — the ones we pinned for you earlier — are the evening move: dinner with your feet in the sand, then DJ sets as the sun drops into the ocean. Build at least one evening around it.
Fonte da Telha and the southern beaches — keep driving south and the coast empties: dune-backed sand under fossil cliffs, kitesurfers, a small fishing community. Bring water and an umbrella — facilities thin out, and so do the crowds.
Surf — consistent, beginner-friendly waves, and the schools lining the beach are used to groups; most take walk-ups or a day's-notice booking.

Palaces in a misty forest mountain — candy-coloured Pena is the postcard. Start early; August queues are real.
Gothic gardens and the spiral initiation well — the one people talk about after.
The westernmost point of mainland Europe — cliffs, lighthouse, wind, drama.
Ride the flat coastal path past Boca do Inferno to wild Guincho beach; drinks at a sandbar, easy roll back.
Big Atlantic sky, dunes, kite- and windsurfers — the dramatic end of the bike ride.
Cliff-backed coves — Portinho, Galapinhos — with improbably clear water; Azeitão wine cellars next door.
A fishing town that takes lunch very seriously — seafront grills, fish by the kilo, slow afternoon.
One local rhythm worth adopting: lunch is the big meal — and take note that dinner starts late in Portugal, with restaurants typically beginning at 21:00. A pastel de nata with an espresso — uma bica — is legal tender at any hour.
